ACHALA UPENDRAN is from Hyderabad, India. She completed an undergraduate and postgraduate degree in English Literature at Delhi University. She then worked as an Editorial Assistant with HarperCollins Publishers India, before leaving to freelance as a consulting editor with literary agents and publishing houses, as well as independent authors both Indian and international. Her writing on popular culture, particularly fantasy books and superhero movies, has appeared in a number of Indian publications. Her first book, a fantasy saga set in a South Asian mythos, will be published by Hachette India in early 2018. At SCA, her research focusses on race and representation in science fiction/fantasy media, specifically questions of fan engagement and ‘race bending’.
