Michael LaRocco is an Annenberg and Provost PhD Fellow, filmmaker, and media artist at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts, and starting in fall 2018 he will be Assistant Professor of Digital Media at Bellarmine University. Both his academic and creative work investigate the evolution of film and video technologies and their application in media practice. His dissertation, “Video Camera Technology in the Digital Age: Industry Standards and the Culture of Videography,” traces the development of digital video from the bulky camcorders of the mid-90s to the immersive virtual reality cameras of the present, across various communities of practice, from home video to Hollywood.

Prior to his time in academia, he taught media study and production extensively at the high school level, as well as at art centers and community-based organizations in Chicago. As a media producer, he trained at esteemed documentary production company Kartemquin Films and has since worked with many clients both behind the camera and in the editing room, including the Lollapalooza Music Festival, filmmaker Ondi Timoner/Interloper Films, Asylum Entertainment, Oxford University, the Chicago Tribune, and the Bebe Miller Dance Company.
